The Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor aircraft with both VTOL and STOL capabilities. 160 have been build all developed exclusively for the United States Armed Forces. Each unit is priced at US$69.3 million.

History Edit

After the failure of the Iran hostage rescue mission in 1980 the US military realised the need for a new type of aircraft that could not only take off vertically but also carry as much as a company of SF troops into battle at speed. The JVX aircraft was designated the MV-22 Osprey on 15th January 1985. The first MV-22 was released with significant media attention, however the program was stalled due to budget cuts. The program was rebooted during the 90's and the first MV-22 was introduced on 13th June 2007

Design Edit

The Osprey is the world's first production tiltrotor aircraft, with one three bladed proprotor, turbopprop engine, and transmission nacelle mounted on each wingtip. Once airborne, the nacelles can tilt 90 degrees as little as 12 seconds after horizontal flight converting the MV-22 to a more fuel efficient aircraft. The MV-22 has two Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engines which are connected by drive shafts. The MV-22 is also equipped with a glass cockpit, which incorporates Multi-functional displays and one shared Central Display Unit allowing the pilots to display a variety of images.

Armament Edit

The V-22 Osprey is primarily a transport helicopter but has a variety of armament including one NATO .308 calibre M240 machine gun or M2 machine gun on the loading ramp.

Capacity Edit

The V-22 can carry up to 32 troops, 20,000lbs of cargo or 1 growler light ground vehicle. It contains four crew members; a pilot, copilot and two flight engineers or crew chiefs.

Role In Battle: Los Angeles

V-22 Ospreys can by seen carrying troops into the FOB at Santa Monica. Not one is shot down despite being under heavy flak.
